What are all those people doing out on the street?

Filed under: general — bdparker @ 1:00 pm

Every once in a while, I’ll have the day off. Sometimes I work from home, run errands on a long lunch, or come in late. Whenever I do, I notice that there are people everywhere. Traffic is jammed, people are speeding up and down the freeways, the mall is busy. Lots of people walking dogs, jogging, riding bikes.
I think, “Why aren’t any of these people at work?” How do you just get to hang out on the street or at the grocery store all day?
Granted, practically everybody in the mall on a weekday is a young woman pushing a stroller. Clearly young stay-at-home moms walk the mall all day. That’s reasonable.
But what about everybody else? How do you get to take your dog to the park at 2pm?
Luckily, I’m not the only one to ever ask this question.
Freelance writer Chris Colin asks the question “Why aren’t you working?”

Thanks for the compliment

Filed under: general — bdparker @ 1:13 pm

British men are too afraid to pay women compliments, according to a survey last week. What are they afraid of? If Adam Lusher’s experiments in compliment-paying are anything to go by, it could be British women

A survey of 1,000 women has found that 89 per cent might love to receive a compliment, but 67 per cent felt very uncomfortable if it came from anybody other than their husband or boyfriend. Fully 65 per cent always suspected an agenda behind any compliment from a stranger.

It’s a dangerous thing.

Laundry Day Math

Filed under: general — bdparker @ 6:53 pm

Six loads of laundry, five laundry rooms, three floors.
The difficult part is remembering what I put where when and then remembering to go back to the right floor and the right room at the right time.
That and folding six loads of laundry.

Serduchka!

Summer’s around the corner, and I’m excited. Summer is my favorite season in DC. Summer is probably my favorite season anywhere. I still don’t think it gets hot enough here for long enough in the summer, but I’m burning fossil fuels as fast as I can to get that global temperature up.
I need faster internets.
And finally, via The Manolo, I present you Verka Serduchka

Wisdom Tax

Filed under: general — bdparker @ 9:51 pm

Whenever I decide to brave the stoplights on my way to work, I pass a business sign that says “Wisdom Tax”
My initial reaction is always the same. “Man! They will find a way to tax anything!”

Clean

Filed under: general — bdparker @ 10:27 pm

I just finished cleaning my apartment, which is kind of a big deal because I’ve been seriously putting it off for over a week, and just half-heartedly putting it off for a while before that. It’s also not such a big deal, as the whole place is only 460 square feet. It took me about two hours to give the whole place a thorough scrubbing. Makes me like having a small home.

Okay, we’re not Perdue University, but I am glad to see that my Alma Mater made both the MPAA (#14) and the RIAA (#9) lists of top pirating universities.

Our hearts ever hold you N C STATE in the folds of our love and pride.

In related news, the world’s third largest record company, EMI, has agreed to sell their music DRM-free on iTunes. The music will also be offered at twice the sound quality of that already offered on iTunes and similar music download services. Welcome to the digital age.
